North Sydney Dental Practice are experts in “smile improvement”, so we have a wide range of cosmetic dental treatment options to get your your best smile possible. Dental Veneers are one of those techniques, so what are Veneers and how do they improve your smile?
What are dental veneers?
A dental veneer is a type of restorative treatment which covers the front surface of the teeth. Veneers can be fitted over any number of teeth, however, for a nicer aesthetic look, 4, 6 or 8 veneers are usually recommended. Most people have them placed on their upper teeth only, but depending on what is visible in your smile, veneers can be placed on the lower teeth as well.
They can be useful for patients with:
- Stained teeth
- Chipped Teeth
- Teeth that are worn down
- Closing gaps between teeth
- Correct (minor) crooked teeth
What are veneers made of?
Veneers are made of two materials – porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain veneers are like little shells that sit over the front surface of the tooth. They are custom made to fit precisely over the prepared tooth to replicate natural tooth structure and colour. Composite veneers are made by the dentist by applying a layer of resin to the required teeth, and then shaped to the desired appearance.
How long do veneers last?
On average, dental veneers can last anywhere between 5 – 15 years before they need to be replaced, however, many can last longer depending on how well they are maintained both at home and with regular dental appointments. Whilst dental veneers are strong and durable, care and consideration should be taken to prevent chipping or breaking. It is recommended not to chew hard things (like ice) and to curb habits such as chewing on pens and finger nails to ensure longevity. Should a dental veneer chip or break, we recommend booking in to see your dentist as soon as possible.
Advantages of Dental Veneers
Dental veneers offer several cosmetic and functional advantages.
- Veneers can change the shape, colour, length, width and straightness of your teeth, improving your smile.
- Veneers can be designed to match the current colour of your teeth, or can be lightened for a whiter smile
- Make a quick change to your smile. Veneers can be working for your smile in two to three weeks, or even in one visit if having composite veneers.
- It’s easy on your mouth – gums can easily tolerate both porcelain and composite veneers
Do veneers ruin your teeth?
The short answer, no, dental veneers do not ruin your teeth. The tooth is prepared to accommodate the veneer on the natural tooth. In some instances, very little needs to be done for the veneer to sit seamlessly. Some light polishing and preparation may be required depending on the individual patient needs. The glue which cements the veneer to the tooth is also safe on the teeth.
Veneers are considered a permanent restorative treatment option and suitability should be discussed with your dentist.
How much do veneers cost?
Composite veneers are a cost-effective, medium-term solution that can help transform your smile in just one dental visit. The results can be very good, but the appearance is not as natural, precise and brilliant as porcelain. Porcelain veneers offer the best-looking results because they are designed by a dental technician who is able to select from an array of shades/colours and add custom details to the veneer such as natural speckling. Composite resin is applied directly onto the teeth by the dentist and there are fewer colours/shades available. The cost of veneers can vary depending on each individual’s needs. Composite veneers can range from a few hundred dollars per tooth and porcelain veneers can be a few thousand.
